canine semen analysis
I use the latest generation device iSperm
which is a portable and professional semen analyzer.
iSperm calculates concentration, progressive motility, total motility
and number of doses and extender needed.
Why does my stud need to have his semen evaluated?
A good semen evaluation will give confidence to breeders that your stud will be able to successfully impregnate the female. There are numerous factors that can degrade your stud’s semen. It is very important to do a complete semen evaluation . Gross assessment or eyeballing of sperm numbers, motility or morphology from a wet mount smear can be tremendously misleading. For example, sperm can be very motile, yet be abnormal in shape or function, making the dog infertile.

What are we looking for when we evaluate the semen?
Evaluation of a semen sample includes assessment of:
-
Canine sperm count
-
Canine sperm colour
-
Sperm motility
-
Forward motility
-
Sperm morphology
Count: A sperm count in the 150-500 million sperm per ml is the optimal range for successful breeding. We would expect a good semen sample to have less than 10% abnormal sperm with at least 70% forward motility
Colour: Healthy canine semen should be pearly white or translucent in colour
-
Yellow semen indicates urine contamination, and urine is toxic to sperm
-
Red discoloration indicates that blood is present either from trauma, prostate problems or infection.
Sperm Motility: Since sperm have to be able to travel up the bitch’s reproductive tract toward her eggs, the measure of how well sperm are moving and in what direction is important. A reading of at least 70% is considered average
Progresive /Forward Motility: Progressive motility refers to the quality of forward motion of the sperm cells.
Non-progressive sperm refers to the movement of sperm that are not forwardly progressive, or sperm that swim in very tight circles. However, for sperm to be of good quality, it must have at least 60-70%progressively motile sperm.
Morphology: Morphology is the evaluation of the structure of the individual sperm. Every ejaculate will contain between 5 and 15% abnormally shaped sperm. To be considered normal, a minimum of 80% of the sperm should have normal morphology. Higher levels of abnormal sperm may be indication that an injury has occurred to the testicle.
All of the above add together to give you a visible reading of active sperm.
On this result I can give you an overview of the sperm mobility.
